From Myanmar to Hong Kong: The Fashion Buyer’s Tips

Do the following brand names sound familiar to you – Zara, H&M Group, UNIQLO, GAP, and Topshop? Fast fashion has become prevalent nowadays because of its low-priced yet stylish products. The clothes roll quickly from design to retail stores to meet trends, with new collections selling constantly.

We are glad to invite our tenant, Cindy, who works in the fast fashion industry, for a short chat. She shares her experience in this industry and her daily life in Dash Living.

1. Can you tell us about yourself?

Back in university, I studied Civil engineering at West Yangon Technology University in Myanmar and extended my postgraduate at Southeast Missouri University in the USA, majoring in Technology Management at University. After graduating, I chose my professional in the fashion industry as my family business is related to garment production fashion. I started working as a trainee in the sourcing department of one of the fast fashion brands.

I was stably working in the company for 4 years straight in the Myanmar office. However, around two years ago, there was a military coup in Myanmar, and thus, I needed to move to another country. My company relocated me to Hong Kong and helped recommend Dash Living for accommodation.

2. Could you share your thoughts on Hong Kong’s fashion habits?

Tricky question as I feel there is a significant influence of Japanese fashion trends on Hong Kongers. Teenagers, like university students, have sharp eyes on the fashion.

In General, I could feel more casual outfits rather than fashionable outfits. Even though I’m working In the fashion industry, most of my colleagues wear very casually, and few colleagues, including me, care more about fashion.

3. Could you recommend a few brands for tenants, especially young professionals?

As for my personal choice of luxury brands, vintage Prada and Chanel are the perfect collections for your bags and shoes. For outfits, one dress from Theory could support you with a more professional look.

Besides, I recommend exploring Midwest for persons keen on vintage/ thrift hunting. You may even find a Ralph Laurent Polo at a super reasonable price.

If you are concerned about the price, Mee Gee is also a marvellous choice. Or you can also visit Zara, which has reasonable prices and fashionable clothes. But highly recommend you try them on yourself before buying as the cutting may be out of expectation – so go store shopping, not online!!

4. Any tips to look better while dressing up?

My focus is matching bags and shoe colors (normally using black colour), which can match most of your outfits. I alter my fashion taste also depending on the season or occasion. However, My typical fashion style is indie girl aesthetic style even though I’m in my late twenties. I also care about the accessories such as earrings, necklaces, and rings based on what I choose for my outfit. For example, I would pay more attention to big/colourful earrings if I chose a long turtleneck plain dress.

As for accessories, you can visit Lovisa, located in the Kowloon Bay shopping mall. Or you can buy some gorgeous and unique accessories when you travel – the earrings I wear were bought in Thailand. Depending on the dress’ brightness and colour (contrast or harmonious colours), you can pick the suitable necklaces or earrings.

Last but not least, Hong Kong people like lace, pearl and gemstones as their accessories which are great choices too!

5. How’s your life in Dash Living?

Kind of full of fun and pleasure moments here. One of the greatest things that happened to me in HK was buying a cat. After six months in Hong Kong, I bought a cat, Luke. It’s a ten-month-old English Short Hair Cat, but it’s already more than 4 KG! After all, having a cat accompanying me while living here in Dash Living is lovely.

I have enjoyed my stay in Dash Living as the service responds rapidly. Once, my water heater broke, and I needed to repair it. Dash Living Team solved the problem swiftly, and everything became normal again quickly.

Besides, I like the community events a lot – the yoga and other events are intriguing. I even met new friends from Singapore, the USA and Italy at some events! Such a diverse community.
