Welcome to the third area in our Dashplorer hidden-gems-hunt, Geylang! With Farrer Park and The West being such a blast, we know that many of you could not wait for Dashplorer to go to your area, so we hope Geylang is where you live or want to explore next 👀

Sit tight and check out this guide of cool bars, unique eateries, and uncommon things to do in Geylang 🥳 ‘Nuff said, let’s explore the places we’ve curated just for you!

Bars 🍺

There’s no lack of bars in Geylang, but these three stand out in certain ways. Read on to find out what’s special about these three bars and if one catches your eye, go ahead and check it out 🍻

TIPSY BIRD GASTROBAR

Decorated with an abundance of greens, Tipsy Bird Gastrobar is hard to miss. The leafy decor represents the bar’s hope to transform into a jungle and be a resting nest for customers like you! This unique bar’s signature is the Ferris Wheel Shots where six or more shots are served on a ferris wheel, with the glasses acting as gondolas. Pair your shots with their popular wet-aged steaks and your night won’t go wrong 🍺

They frequently have hip-hop nights where DJs mix up sick tunes for the crowd 🎶 The staff is also very friendly and big on festivals, with discounts to give out on many occasions. And if you need one last push – they have a bar cat, Marble 🐱

TENANTS’ FAVOURITES
STICKIES @ ALJUNIED

If you think Stickies sounds familiar, you’re right! The West also had a Stickies recommendation by our Dasher. Just like its west side counterpart, Stickies @ Aljunied offers many different alcoholic drinks as well as yummy food to go with your drinks 🍗

“How do I relax after a long week of work? Hmmm, for me, I’d go to a bar with my friends or colleagues and have some drinks. Recently, we’ve been going to this one bar called Stickies and I must say it’s rather promising! There are many items on the menu so we’re slowly trying them out.”

Address: 71 Lorong 23 Geylang, #01-01 THK Building, Singapore 388386

GEYLANG DRIP CITY

This bar recommended by a Dasher is not like the other bars we’ve included in our guides previously. Instead of alcohol, this bar is a Muslim-owned coffee bar ☕

“I stumbled upon this coffee bar while walking around randomly with a friend and our attention was immediately captured. The place has a black interior and a minimalistic style, making it look hip and edgy! Also, as a bar, they’re unique for selling coffee instead of alcohol.”

Address: 184 Geylang Rd, Singapore 389253

Food 🍜

We know some of you scrolled right to this section because who can resist good food, am I right? 😉 From dim sum to bak chor mee (minced meat noodles), let’s explore these spots that each offer a wildly different cuisine from the next! Psst, some of them are open till late or even for 24 hours so jot down your next supper spot now 😏

BANH MI THIT BY STAR BAGUETTE

Banh Mi Thit by Star Baguette is an intimate bistro in the middle of a stretch of shophouses along Geylang Road. True to their name, they mainly sell banh mi, a Vietnamese food that is getting increasingly popular here in Singapore. Banh Mi Thit’s baguettes are homemade daily and stuffed full of ingredients so you don’t have to worry about satisfying your hunger! Many are also raving about how delicious and authentic the banh mi is, so it’s definitely worth checking out 🥖

126 DIM SUM WEN DAO SHI

If there’s something that people are always up for, it’s dim sum. These small dishes that hailed mainly from Hong Kong have captured the hearts of many and there are always new dishes popping up, promising something for everyone! Take 126 Dim Sum Wen Dao Shi as an example. They have an extensive range of dishes – from everyone’s favourite siew mai to the more fusion-like fried banana with mango roll to the very uncommon crispy yam pie. They even have off-menu items like egg tart (which is not always available but you can try your luck!) so what’s there not to like about dim sum? 🤩

TENANTS’ FAVOURITES
THE SKEWER BAR

The Skewer Bar was recommended to us by a Dasher who misses yakitori. Their Japanese BBQ skewers are amazing and priced rather affordably. They even serve Japanese dishes and some local fusion dishes! 🍡

“One of the things I miss most about Japan is the izakaya so imagine how happy I was to discover The Skewer Bar! Though of course eating yakitori in Singapore will never feel the same as eating it in Japan, this spot does feel the gap in my heart.”

Address: 2 Lor 25 Geylang, Singapore 388287

FELLASCUBE

FellasCube is a coffee shop highly recommended by a Dasher who said that they eat there ‘twice a week’! Though FellasCube pride themselves on their coffee, our Dasher is here to spill what else is good 👀

“You definitely have to try their Thai food and rösti. They’re sooooo good that even though I’m in Geylang most of the week, I still never get tired of the food and pop by frequently!”

Address: 440 Geylang Rd, Singapore 389400

Things to Do 👣

As they say, ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’. So to best explore an area, try out the activities available there! And if you’re from Geylang but don’t know these places exist, then you’re in for a treat to a whole new Geylang 👀 Well then, let’s have a look at what Geylang has to offer us, shall we? 🧭

Geylang Serai Heritage Gallery may not be as well-known as the other museums in Singapore, but it’s definitely as interesting as them! Located at the corner of the Wisma Geylang Serai, a community center in Geylang, this museum depicts the history of the area through interactive means such as phones, old artifacts that are not framed up (but should not be touched 🙅🏽) and newer artifacts that can be touched! In fact, they have kampong games like chaptehs and five stones that you can play with 😉

HIP XIONG PHOTO STUDIO

Why are we introducing a photo studio, you ask? That’s because Hip Xiong Photo Studio is Singapore’s only wet plate tintype portrait studio! They employ a historical photography process that creates a unique aesthetic in the photos which, as an added bonus, can also last for centuries 📷 Apart from taking photos for you, Hip Xiong also holds workshops for everyone to learn more about this distinctive photography method.

TENANTS’ FAVOURITES
SSVP SHOP THRIFT SHOP

SSVP – Society of St Vincent de Paul – Shop is a charity shop where you can donate your valuable pre-loved items for the shop to sell and also buy items donated by others that are for sale at the shop. Items donated and money spent at SSVP will go towards helping people in need! A Dasher recommended this shop to us purely because of the good deeds that the shop is doing and which we should all aspire to do 💞

“I think a shop that everybody should check out is SSVP. Not only are they helping the poor, they’re also making sure that the world is more sustainable through reselling pre-loved items!”

THE INTAN

If Geylang Serai Heritage Gallery isn’t enough for you, you’ll be glad to know that there’s another museum in Geylang! The Intan is dedicated to the Peranakan culture and is actually based in the owner/collector’s home 🏠They have a range of different types of visits, with most of them offering you a taste of Peranakan cuisine, so if you’re interested to know more about this culture, check them out now!

“I’m not going to lie and I know that it will sound nerdy to some, but I was super excited to visit The Intan simply because of how immersive I know it will be! Peranakan culture is beautiful – from their food to their items – and to be able to soak them all in while in a Peranakan haven? It’s a 10/10 experience.”
