Coliving Highlights: A Suitcase of Kimchi, Instagram Spots & Learning From a Pro Baker!

The “What do tenants do in the common area of a  coliving space?” question – which every person who works for a coliving operator is asked at some point or another. However, there can’t be just a category for all the activities I’ve seen, it’s an anomaly. Being an expat from U.K (Manchester to be a little more specific 😉 and living in Hong Kong for the past few years, this concept is still new to me and most of my friends in U.K.

2020 was an interesting year as I got to try out new things including working as the community host at Dash Coliving Carnvaron and learn the fundamentals of baking from a Michellin Chef and tenants who are pro baker. Some of my recipes which I’ve succeeded includes yuzu cakes, puff pastries, chiffon cakes, baguettes, toast bread, pizza dough, Chinese sausage rolls – you name, I’ve tried it!

However, just like baking bread, it’s one thing to read about it – it’s totally different to experience it. So here’s some of what I’ve seen in 2020 as a community host and some of the highlights.

Most memorable moment…

  1. I met a tenant who is coincidentally from the same hometown in Manchester, U.K. What are the chances of meeting someone on the other side of the world from a small countryside town!
  2. A tenant was leaving Hong Kong last minute for personal reasons. He wrote a goodbye letter to all his friends in coliving – this was quite touching!
  3. Seeing strangers become a couple!

Funniest moment…

Seeing a tenant bring home a suitcase of kimchi to fill the fridge! Also, the sight of many dozen eggs in the fridge, haha!

Surprising moment…

    1. Our tenant Stephane from France introduced himself with his mandarin name and taught us how to write his name at our calligraphy event
    2. When our tenant lost her keycard and then found it in the laundry room [we searched for an hour!]. 2 tenants also helped her find it, and we laughed it off afterwards.

Best Insta-spot…

Definitely the swinging chair on the rooftop. Tenants always tell me how much they love the swing.

Favourite event…

When our tenant Micheal (a professional baker from France) hosted his baking workshop for other tenants. We learned how to make a chocolate yuzu cake.

Chef Michael explaining the recipe of Chocolate Yuku Cake.

Weirdest thing I have seen…

Leggings were lying around! Haha – a tenant left it in the laundry room but picked them up at the end of the day.

Happiest moment…

Seeing a real sense of community there – tenant hosting events for everyone. Also, the snack and book sharing corner….

Fabulous request….

Tenant requesting to set up an eyelash pop up booth event!

Coliving means……

Community, privacy, and connection.

Lounge space, kitchen, balcony or rooftop?

Kitchen – is the space where I can cook and also a chance to talk to neighbors while cooking.

Whether you’re in Hong Kong long or short term, serviced coliving promises a community feel with all the benefits of a serviced apartment. Keen to try it out? Check out Dash Coliving here.
