Hong Kong Transport Guide

Hong Kong may be small, but it has an overwhelmingly large amount of choices for getting around town, ranging from slow but fun trams to fast bullet-like express trains to the airport. Here is your very own guide to save money and time while traveling around Hong Kong.

1. Taxis aren’t always the best option (until late night)
Traffic congestions can be terrible here in Hong Kong, take the MTR during rush hours to ensure that you don’t get stuck in tunnels or long jams. Taking a taxi late night is always a great option since it’s fast and safe.

2. Trams are great for places between MTR stations
There are some nooks and crannies along the Hong Kong Line that are not that close to MTR stations. Hop on a tram to go to places in between stops.

3. Take the Ferry not only for the views
If you’re near Central Pier and need to get to Tsim Sha Tsui, don’t go back to an MTR station for this but get on the Star Ferry. There are also other ferries which can help save some time, such as the North Point <–> Whampoa Line or the Kwun Tong <–> North Point ferry.

4. Get an Octopus card for the best discounts and convenience
Getting an Octopus Card can help you save so much, you get 10% off second trips and also discounts on certain bus lines when changing transportation. Get one at any MTR station and remember that you can top-up at any convenience store nearby.

5. Airport Express round-trip tickets are great value
If you’re coming in pairs or groups, remember to check out the counter at the Airport Express to get group tickets that are usually much cheaper than getting a trip there one way!

6. Red vans and Green ones?
The difference between the two is that red van drivers own the vehicle, and the minibus company employs green van drivers. This means that some red vans do not have an octopus card reader so be prepared to pay in cash. Also, be mentally prepared for a crazy roller-coaster ride.

7. West Rail Line and Light Rail Train
Lines connecting to the West Rail Line may differ in fares and schedules so check before you plan your day. The Light Rail is only available near the Yuen Long area and payment is also a little different: you pay after you get off.
