Bringing Holistic Wellness to Dash Living

Mindful Studio HK was established in 2020 in Hong Kong as founder Simon Hui’s brainchild, inspired by his spiritual journey which brought him to some of the most sacred places on earth including the Himalayan regions of India and Nepal, and the most eminent meditation centres of Thailand and Myanmar. We caught up with Simon recently to learn more about his fascinating journey (that is still evolving), especially on his decision to ordain as a monk, and the importance of meditation. 

Can you introduce yourself and how you got into your wellness journey?

I used to work in the aviation and property industries. As I climbed the corporate ladder, stresses and strains began to build up to a point where I began to question the purpose and meaning of life. I was not in good shape mentally, and physically I was out of shape. One day a friend introduced me to yoga. It was a nice change of scenery to exercise the body and the mind, and to sweat it all out. After practice I felt a sense of lightness and calmness—so much so when I went to work the following day, I could handle work with a calmer and sharper mind. After a few weeks of practice I thought to myself there must be something more to this ancient wisdom. That’s how I began to set out on the “path.” I was curious as to what was really happening at the deeper level. Why was yoga making things different? Eventually I decided to go to India to learn about this ancient science from its root.

Can you tell us more about your time in India?

On my first visit I stayed for 6 weeks for a yoga teacher training course. It was the first time I was exposed to such intense practices, including cleansing practices, fasting, chanting, and meditation. I returned to India on two more occasions, and gradually I built up my knowledge and experience. At one point I was introduced to the Buddhist lineage; I was so fascinated by Buddhism I even became a monk for 3 years so I could live a spiritual life on a full time basis. Being away from all the distractions, I was able to cultivate mindfulness and I often reflected upon the cravings of the mind. 

Why did you return to Hong Kong?

After a while, it was time to return to society and I attempted to put on my suit and tie. But then COVID-19 struck and the aviation industry was hit hard. I decided that now might be the time to apply all the knowledge I have learned and I took the leap of faith to open Mindful Studio HK amidst the pandemic.

What is your life mantra?

Benefit others, and you will benefit yourself. 

If someone were interested in meditation but didn’t know where to start, what would you tell them? 

Practise 5-10 minutes per day. Try to do it daily in the same spot and time to build a routine. Be determined and keep the routine for 3 to 4 weeks and you’ll begin to see a change. Once the shift happens it will be easier for you to sustain the practice.

 

What does it mean to be healthy to you? 

For the mind, body, and spirit to be holistic. To be healthy and well is to be totally present and not be defined by your past. We have all had long histories, and past events might affect us deeply. As life moves on better things will happen if we make room for them to happen.

 

How do you incorporate a healthy lifestyle into your daily routine? Do you have any tips for our tenants at Dash Living?

  1. Declutter. Declutter your living environment first before decluttering your mind. 
  2. To be healthy and well, you must be your whole self and let yourself shine. Don’t worry too much about what others think of you.
  3. Don’t underestimate the power of rest.
  4. It’s ok to say “no” if the situation warrants such an answer. You don’t always need to explain or justify. 
  5. Try to cultivate a sense of peace and calm at all times (by way of a regular meditation practice). 
  6. Aim to evolve as a person. You are never too old to learn.
