4 Hikes to Check Out in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is known for its hilly terrain and beautiful nature that juxtaposes with its many skyscrapers. If you want to go for a short hike and enjoy the natural landscape, here are some family-friendly trails on Hong Kong Island that won’t take too long and are easily accessible.

1. Dragon’s Back
One of Hong Kong’s most popular hiking trails, the trail is an easy hike for beginners with a moderate amount of steps and a lovely view overlooking the Tathong Channel. The route here is a popular choice with locals, so it gets crowded at the weekend and public holidays.

MTR to Shau Kei Wan Station, Exit A and take bus 9 or the red minibus with the sign “Shek O” to the To Tei Wan stop on Shek O Road.

Quarry Bay Mount Parker
This urban trail leads hikers to Braemar Hills near Causeway Bay. Head up to Woodside from Mount Parker, and you’re connected to a jogging trail leading down to Braemar Hill. It can be quite steep but there is a lot of shade, and you can stop along the way on the benches for a water break.

MTR to Quarry Bay Station Exit B. Head towards East to Taikoo and you will see the “Mount Parker Hiking Trail” signpost within a 5-minute walk.

2. Victoria Peak Stroll
If you’re looking for a casual stroll, head towards the Peak. The scenic route around Victoria Peak offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon. Great for families with younger kids or even a baby pram.

Take the Peak Tram from MTR Admiralty Station or take Bus 15 from Admiralty to the Peak.

3. Pok Fu Lam Reservoir
Start at the base in Pok Fu Lam and hike up for an hour. As you get higher above sea level, you will start to see the concrete jungle in a different light. The hike is short, but it can become steep at times.

MTR to HKU station and take the bus 90B or 91 to Pokfulam Reservoir Road.

4. Mount Parker To Tai Tam Reservoir
Start at the same spot at Quarry Bay Mount Parker trail and head towards Tai Tam. You’ll reach a fork where you can head up to Windy Gap, aka Tai Fung Au. Head for Tai Tam after you climbed Windy Gap, you’ll be able to see the reservoir with your own eyes. On a good day, you can see the reflection of all the mountains in the water.

MTR to Quarry Bay Station, Exit B. Head towards East to Taikoo and you will see a signpost “Mount Parker Hiking Trail” in 5 minutes.
